BMW’s revealing an open-topped i8 at the Beijing Motor Show later this month. The i8 Concept Spyder is a little shorter than the coupe, and a two-seater with a two-piece folding roof and swing-up ‘swan’ doors. Its plug-in hybrid powertrain comprises a 220hp turbocharged three-cyclinder petrol engine which drives the rear wheels and a 96kW electric motor up front, giving a total 349hp, and it’s said to have an all-electric range of nearly 20 miles. It’ll do 155mph, 0-60 in less than five seconds, and return up to 94mpg; full recharge time for the lithium-ion batteries is two hours. The batteries are mounted in the central ‘spine’ to keep the centre of gravity low and for optimum weight distribution; a transparent cover at the back gives a view of the engine (which is set to also feature in the next-generation Mini range, apparently) and in the small luggage compartment, there are two electric scooters.
