Toyota GRMN Sports Hybrid concept revealed at the ‘Ring

Toyota is to reveal a mid-engined hybrid convertible prototype at the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race this weekend (though as far as I can see, it’s not actually going to take part in the race itself). The GRMN Sports Hybrid Concept II has been developed from the MR2-based concept shown in at the Tokyo Auto Salon last year, and features a mid-mounted 3.5 V6 (245bhp) driving the rear wheels and an electric motor driving the front; total power output is 295bhp. GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing tuned by “Meister of Nürburgring”, referring to the much-respected Toyota test-driver and Gazoo Racing team chief Hiromu Naruse, who died last year. Pictures and video at Toyota UK’s Today/Tomorrow blog; the car will be on display at the Goodwood Festival of Speed the following weekend too.

In other news (blimey, it’s all happening today):

  • GKN Driveline, a leading supplier firm, has formed a joint venture with UK e-drive solution-provider EVO Electric to make and sell motors and drive systems for hybrid and all-electric vehicles. GKN’s buying 25.1% of EVO Electric and investing £5million.  The JV’s to be called GKN Evo e-drive Systems; full release at GKN’s website. This looks like a pretty big strategic partnership.
  • Germany’s Schaeffler Group has developed a stop-start system to fit in conjunction with automatic gearboxes. This is said to cut out (sorry, no pun intended) the problems of jerky or slow re-starts by keeping the starter permanently engaged, and gets around the issue with engaging/disengaging a torque converter. Fuel savings could be up to 8% around town. Full story at Ward’s Auto.
