Joule coming close to production

The Zagato-designed Optimal Energy Joule is coming close to production, and is now into the prototyping phase. A fleet of vehicles for marketing/media use is being built, and full production is scheduled for late 2013.

The Joule, unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year, is a small family-sized hatchback with full electric drivetrain and lithium-ion batteries. Developed in South Africa, its production will be in partnership with German consultancy EDAG. Optimal Energy promises a 143-mile range on the new European Driving Cycle (or 186 miles at lower urban speeds),  freeway cruising capability and a competitive price tag, and has upped its earlier ambitions on safety to aim for a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating.
