GM has a Bright Idea

August 4, 2010 § Leave a comment

General Motors is investing in Bright Automotive Inc., an Indiana-based start-up which has developed a plug-in hybrid van called the Idea. The strategic partnership gives General Motors Ventures a minority stake in the firm, and gives Bright access to GM technologies and powertrain systems.

The Bright Idea (no relation to the Fiat Idea) is a lightweight, aerodynamic van created from scratch using input from potential fleet customers. It gives 36mpg (US) with the engine running and has a 40-mile range in all-electric mode, enough for local deliveries. Bright also runs a consultancy service called eSolutions.
