Electric rotation

Excuse me for a quick airborne diversion. Helicopters scare the bejesus out of me – there’s something inherently wrong about relying on rotational power to remain above ground, I’ve always thought – but if you can get to grips with the chopper concept, this is an interesting proposition.

Sikorsky has announced Project Firefly at the Farnborough Air Show this week: this has a 200bhp electric motor and lithium-ion batteries, and is based on its old-school lightweight two-seater ‘trainer’. Quite apart from the eco benefits, Firefly will be quiet, too – hopefully Sussex Police, whose eye-in-the-sky is currently shattering the peace all along the coast every weekend, will sign up for one soon.
