Mini-Mini to appear next year

The long-rumoured ‘mini-Mini’ or ”Mini Minor’ could be revealed at next spring’s Geneva Motor Show, according to Autoweek. More details of this tiny city car are emerging: it’s thought to be a two-seater (to rival the Smart Fortwo) or perhaps to have a three-seat layout similar to that of the Toyota iQ.
It’s to be built on a shorter-wheelbase version of the BMW Project i front-engined/front-wheel drive platform which will underpin the Mega City Vehicle, but will be an altogether smaller, cheaper vehicle than the BMW, without carbonfibre bodywork or an expensive powertrain: a conventional, although ultra-economical, petrol engine is said to be on the cards, at least initially.
Styling is expected to have a retro feel, says Autoweek, which notes that BMW-Mini is concerned that such a small car can be profitable, and that no decision will be made as to its production until reaction to the Geneva concept car is gauged. However, a mini-Mini has long been under consideration for the brand, with earlier proposals for such a model including the 1997 Spiritual concept (pictured).
