Mitsubishi Evo to evolve as a hybrid?

Here’s a rumour I just read: the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution XI, due 2013, is going to be a hybrid. Motor Trend reckons that it’ll be based on the same platform as the PX-MiEV plug-in hybrid crossover (pictured), seen in concept form at last year’s Tokyo Auto Show, and that it’ll have a version of the 2.0-litre petrol engine in the latest Galant.
Lithium-ion batteries will back up the electric motor and allow for an electric-only mode; the motor will drive the front wheels and the petrol engine the rear, for full four-wheel drive handling with both power sources engaged. Total power output could be up to 350bhp, with a target 0-60mph time of 4.5 seconds.
Motor Trend’s man in Japan quotes an engineer as saying “the electric motor will effectively work like a turbo, but smoother”, and stresses that performance and handling will remain priorities. New features for the Evo XI will also include active steering, roll control suspension and electronically-controlled active yaw control to regulate torque between the rear wheels.
