Geneva Motor Show: Kia Venga EV

March 2, 2010 § Leave a comment

Kia’s doing the electric thing with a plug-in version of its Venga mini-MPV. This has an 80kW motor giving max torque of 280Nm; it’ll do 87mph and 0-62mph in 11.8 seconds. Range is a claimed 112 miles, with a 20-minute quick-charge giving an 80% capacity (100% charge takes  eight hours).

Under the quick recharging cycle (50 kW) the battery can be recharged to 80 percent of its capacity within 20 minutes.  Under the normal cycle (3.3 kW), 100 percent power is attained after eight hours.

It’s a straightforward conversion with the motor under the bonnet in place of an engine, retaining the front-wheel drive layout, and the lithium-ion battery pack under-floor; it’s a likely contender for imminent production.
