Geneva Motor Show: Audi A1 e-tron

March 2, 2010 § Leave a comment

As expected, Audi came up with an e-tron version of its A1 supermini – and confirmed that this will go into production in 2012. It’s a range-extended hybrid with an all-electric range of 31 miles, and up to 124 miles with the engine kicking in to act as a generator.

And the range-extender engine which works with a 15kW motor? A single-rotor, 101bhp Wankel rotary engine (a nod to Audi’s heritage and the NSU Ro80, perhaps) giving up to 149mph and emitting 45g/km of carbon dioxide. The renaissance of the rotary (Mazda RX-8 apart, of course) starts here.

Audi has also confirmed that a more conventional Q5 hybrid will go into production later this year.
