Electric autobahn

A young German designer has proposed a solution for enabling electric vehicles to travel long distances at high speeds without running out of battery power: an electromagnetic field along the autobahn on which the cars can cruise. The ‘Speedway’ vision of Christian Forg, 27, would use linear induction motors – already in use for railway systems – with a conducting coil under the road surface. Normal cars could continue to use the road without noticing any difference; electric cars could connect onto the wave and cruise, recharging as they go. Forg has founded an agency with two colleagues, and is developing concepts for electric vehicles compatible with his system. Full story at Spiegel Online.
