More power, more mpg from Fiat Multijet diesel

February 10, 2010 § Leave a comment

Fiat is fitting a new 95bhp/200Nm version of its super-efficient 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine in the 500. This 1.3 16v will replace the 75bhp diesel currently offered, but despite the power hike, fuel economy is improved to 72.4mpg (up from the current model’s 67.3mpg) and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced to 104g/km (previously 110g/km). This is partly thanks to the addition of Fiat’s Start&Stop system (as already offered in the petrol 500); a diesel particulate filter is also added. Top speed’s 112mph and 0-62mph will happen in a respectable 10.7 seconds, so this gutsy little engine – an award-winner in its category in the International Engine of the Year Awards – should give a fun drive too.
