Goodwood Festival of Speed #1: Jaguar XJ_e and C-X75

Inside the FoSTech pavilion at the Festival of Speed – well, one of the several inflatable pavilions that made up this exhibit this year. This Jaguar saloon does what it says on the wing: 87mpg and 75g/km, and it’s a plug-in hybrid. Called XJ_e, it’s a demonstrator vehicle trialling the Jaguar Land Rover tech; it features an Axeon lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery with self-contained ‘pouch’ cells, and can travel up to 25 miles in all-electric mode. Performance from this powertrain, which features a humble 2.0-litre engine, is said to be similar to that of the production 5.0 V8 used in the XJ… It’s the result of a project part-funded by the Technology Strategy Board and follows on from the earlier LimoGreen programme. And the super-coupe? That’s the four-motor, gas-turbine C-X75, as seen at last year’s Paris Motor Show.
