Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4: on sale next spring

Peugeot is to launch its diesel-electric 3008 Hybrid4 in Europe next spring. The first series-production diesel-electric hybrid to hit the road, it combines a 163bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine and 37bhp electric motor, giving 74.4mpg and emitting just 99g/km of carbon dioxide. It has an ‘extensive’ all-electric range, says Peugeot, in ZEV mode, plus four-wheel-drive capability (the rear wheels are driven by the electric motor, the front by the engine) and a sports mode. All its drive systems are ‘by wire’ – electronically, rather than mechanically controlled – and stop-start is incorporated to save fuel around town. The Hybrid4 powertrain will feature in further PSA Peugeot-Citroen models at a later date, but in the meantime, the 3008′s a very practical, comfortable family-sized vehicle part-way between a crossover/SUV and compact MPV. No word yet on UK pricing for this model, though.
